Because ITP is an autoimmune disease (a condition in which the body attacks healthy cells by mistake—in ITP, its own platelets), treatments tend to focus on suppressing the immune system. The goal: Preventing antibodies from destroying platelets. How well you’ll respond to a specific treatment depends on many factors, such as your age, your overall health, your platelet count and bleeding symptoms.
